Ladies In Retirement
By: Edward Percy & Reginald Denham Directed by: Malcolm Brown 21st - 28th May 2022 |
“... if one has sinned very deeply, postponement can be death.”
It’s 1885. In an old farmhouse in the Thames marshes, Leonora Fiske and her companion Ellen Creed live in seclusion and retirement. Life is good… until Ellen’s “potty” sisters come to holiday and her nephew Albert Feather turns up.
Once a melodrama, now a psychological thriller, Ladies In Retirement depicts a conflict of morality, love and care at a time when there was no welfare state and people still travelled by pony and trap.

“It’s no good blaming the mirror if the mug’s cracked”
A comedy of errors relevant for our time. This rumbunctious romp of a political satire centres around the corrupt officials of a small Russian town, thrown into panic at the news that an incognito government official is arriving to carry out an inspection.
Nikolai Gogol’s 19th century play bursts with comic tension and is liberally injected with contemporary references in this energetic translation and adaptation by Alistair Beaton.
